If you’re new to vaping, you might be wondering what the heck MTL vape means. And that’s cool – it is a very looking phrase.
So, what does MTL vape mean in the context if vape tanks?
Simple: it means “mouth to lung” and this refers to how you draw in vapor from the tank.
What Does MTL Vape Mean – A Quick Definition
An MTL tank is more like a cigarette; you inhale the vapor into your mouth and then inhale it into your lungs.
A traditional, sub ohm vape tank use a DTL draw, where DTL means “direct to lung” – this means when you take the vapor you breathe it straight down to your lungs (like an inhaler).
And that’s literally it. Simple, right?

MTL vs DTL Vape Tanks – What’s The Difference
As with most things, on the surface, everything seems simple enough, and it kind of is here, but there are quite a few things you need to know about MTL vape tanks.
Especially when compared to DTL vape tanks. And the first thing concerns E Juice…
FOR EXAMPLE: with a DTL sub ohm tank, a tank that produces A LOT of vapor, you’re going to want the hit to be smooth. And for this, you will need high VG E Juice (70-80% VG, basically).
With an MTL tank, because there is less vapor, and the inhale is different, you’re better off with E Juice that has higher levels of PG in it – this ensures more flavor and a throat hit (two things you want).
So…
🔥DTL Tanks = High VG E Juice
🔥MTL Tanks = Higher PG E Juice & Nic Salts E Juice
Performance | Which Style Is Better?
This is kind of a loaded question because it basically depends on the style of vaping you want to do.
If you like loads of clouds and tons of vapor, you’re going to want to go with a DTL vape tank – these include sub ohm tanks, RTAs, RDAs, and RDTAs.
Prefer a style of vaping that is closer to smoking?
You’re 100% better off with an MTL tank, as the draw on these types of tank closely resemble the sensation you get when smoking a cigarette.
JUUL is an MTL vape device, and so too are SvoeMesto’s Kayfun tanks (though they retail for $119). Want a cheaper alternative? Check out my #1 Picks For MTL Tanks Right Now.
Bottomline: if you want a cigarette-style inhale when vaping, you 100% need to go with an MTL vape tank.
Get some tobacco E Juice in one and it tastes and feels just like the real thing! Just be careful though: not all tobacco E Juice is created equally. If you want the best go with Black Note E Liquid.
My Relationship With MTL Vape Tanks
I run all kinds of tanks, from RDAs to sub ohm vape tanks.
But I do love my MTL vape tanks. And the reason for this is as follows:
🔥They Use Less Power (Good For Battery Life & E Juice)
🔥They Kick Out Immense Flavor
🔥You Can Use Nic Salts E Juice In Them
🔥You Have Rebuildable & Non-Rebuildable Options
🔥Vaping Below 20W Ensures Mega-Long Battery Life
I use the GeekVape AMMIT MTL RTA and the Kayfun V5.
These are my go-to MTL vape tanks. I adore both of them, so if you’re thinking of dipping your toe in the MTL waters, they’re a great place to start.
Kayfun’s are VERY expensive, so it might be best starting with the AMMIT RTA or the ARES. That way, you can find your feet and see if it’s for you.
Then, if you want to drop $119 on a Kayfun, you can do so.
MTL Benefits (Things You Might Now Realise)
An MTL vape tank, normally, runs below 20W. And this means you mod’s battery life will extend into days instead of hours.
You can run Nic Salts E Juice in them because they produce less vapor than sub ohm tanks; this means more of a hit from less vaping.
And because they run low, you burn through far less E Juice on a weekly basis which is great if you’re on a tight budget.
For me though, the big USP is battery life. I can take an MTL vape out on a night out, vape it all night, and return home the next day with 40-50% battery life.
Chuck in great flavor and the fact that most, good MTL RTAs don’t leak at all and you’re looking at a truly awesome style of vape tank.
This is why I ALWAYS have an MTL vape tank in rotation.
They’re just so gosh darn useful!
