The VooPoo Drag 6 Battery Controversy: My 2 Cents…

TL;DR: No Removable Batteries? On A Performance Vape Mod? Yikes.

I like the VooPoo Drag 6, it’s currently listed as the best vape mod option inside our 2026 Best Vapes Guide. But I do have some thoughts on it, especially when compared to its predecessor, the VooPoo Drag 5.

The BIG controversy with the Drag 6 is that it now runs a non-removable, 4400mAh internal battery which effectively turns it into a single-use device with a finite lifespan because when the battery dies (and it eventually will), the mod will become useless and no longer work.

Could you replace it? Maybe, providing you have all the gear and perhaps an engineering degree. But that’s not the point. The point is this: my OG VooPoo Drag from freakin’ 2017 still works fine. It’s bashed to bits and looks like shite, but it still works.

And the reason? It runs on removable 18650 cells. The Drag 6 does not and this is where my slight problem with it comes into focus.

Again, I say, slight, because we now live in a world of single-use, landfill-fodder products (disposable vapes, phones, tablets, AirPods, the list goes on and on), so it’s not like VooPoo is breaking with convention.

But as someone that’s used all of its DRAG series mods, going all the way back to the beastly OG model, I always just kind of assumed it’d be a dual-18650 setup.

To be fair, for “modern users” (a nice way of referring to disposable vape fiends) will appreciate the updates, and probably those who have only used refillable pod vapes and closed systems like JUUL and other prefilled vapes.

But us old-school vapers, the guys and gals that have been around since the early days? Guess we’re not factored into the decisions much these days…

OK, Rant Over. Is The New 4400mAh Battery Actually Any Good?

The biggest advantage of the new battery setup is simplicity. There’s no battery charger to buy and you don’t need to purchase external 18650 batteries. For newbie vapers, there’s additional benefits that stack on top of this too: no worrying about battery wraps getting damaged; no need to worry about “battery safety” like storing them properly; and no need to mess around with external chargers.

According to my chats with VooPoo reps, for the overwhelming majority of people buying a vape mod in 2026, that’s exactly what they want. Modern smartphones, tablets, laptops and headphones all use sealed batteries, so the Drag 6 feels familiar in a way older dual-18650 mods don’t.

Again, the point here is to try and capture existing disposable and pod vape users with a simpler overall package, and in this respect (from a marketing point of view, anyway), I get it. Simpler is better, most of the time.

Battery Life Is Better Than I Expected

On paper, the Drag 6 uses two integrated 2200mAh cells for a combined 4400mAh battery.

In my usage of the device, it holds up great. It’ll get through a full day with moderate usage, and the new GENE chip does A LOT of work to keep the power delivery consistent even has the battery drains (more on this in a bit).

Running the device between 50W and 80W, I had no problem getting through a full day without reaching for the charger. Heavy chain vaping at higher wattage with RDAs shortens that, but that’s true of any high-powered mod.

Charging also feels surprisingly quick. A full recharge generally takes somewhere around 90 minutes to two hours, depending on your charger. I like to give mine a quick top-up around 3pm just to make sure I have all the power I want later on in the day.

Performance Feels More Consistent

Battery capacity isn’t the only thing that’s changed.

The Drag 6 also introduces VOOPOO’s new GENE.TT 3.0 chipset and increases maximum output to 220W.

If you vape at 60-90W like most people, you probably won’t notice much difference between 177W and 220W.

Where you do notice it is how the Drag 6 behaves as the battery drains.

With the internal battery pack and updated chipset working together, power delivery feels remarkably consistent throughout the charge cycle. The vape feels almost identical at 70% battery as it does at 25%.

It’s a subtle improvement, but one that makes the device feel more refined.

So What’s The Biggest Downside of The Switch?

This is where removable 18650 batteries still win.

When the batteries inside a Drag 5 eventually lose capacity after years of charging, you simply buy two new cells.

With the Drag 6, that’s no longer an option.

Once the internal battery starts degrading, you’re effectively looking at replacing the entire device rather than spending £20-30 on fresh batteries.

That’s a real long-term cost consideration.

Dual 18650 mods also let you carry spare batteries, meaning your vape never has to be connected to a charger.

For heavy users or people who spend long days away from power, that’s still a genuine advantage.

Which Design Is Actually Better?

VooPoo Drag 5 vs Drag 6 Which One Should You Actually BuyPin

The answer depends entirely on what kind of vaper you are.

If you want the easiest possible experience with excellent battery life, stable power delivery and zero battery management, the Drag 6 is unquestionably the better product.

  • It feels modern and it comes in a range of colors and premium finishes.
  • It looks great; I much prefer the new design language over the boxier Drag 5 styling.
  • It’s super-robust; I’ve dropped mine a few times and it was perfectly fine.

And it removes one of the biggest barriers that puts newer users off buying vape mods.

If, however, you enjoy the flexibility of removable batteries, want to minimise long-term ownership costs or simply like being able to swap fresh cells into your mod in seconds, the Drag 5’s dual-18650 design is still hard to beat.

My Verdict

I understand why some long-time mod users weren’t thrilled when VOOPOO abandoned dual 18650 batteries.

I was sceptical too.

But after using the Drag 6, I’m now less angry about the decision. For the record, I still think it’d be a better device with removable batteries, but here we are…

  • For most people, convenience beats modularity.
  • The built-in 4400mAh battery delivers excellent runtime, consistent performance and removes a lot of the hassle associated with external batteries.
  • That doesn’t make it objectively better engineering than dual 18650s.
  • It just makes it a better fit for how most people vape today.
  • If you’re buying your first high-powered vape mod, I’d recommend the Drag 6 without hesitation.

If you’re an enthusiast who already owns quality 18650 cells and values replaceable batteries above everything else, the Drag 5 remains one of the best dual-battery mods you can buy.
