IQOS Claims 20+ Million Users. But Is It Any Good? My 2 Cents…

How IQOS is Different From A Traditional Vape:

  • IQOS heats real tobacco instead of burning it; there is no e-liquid or vape juice.
  • The tobacco comes in purpose-made sticks, and there are two types to know about: HEETS, also called HeatSticks in some markets, work in blade-style IQOS devices, including the US IQOS ORIGINALS.
  • TEREA sticks work only in IQOS ILUMA, which heats tobacco by induction.
  • I’ve done a separate TEREA flavor rankings guide here.

IQOS is Big Tobacco’s take on a middle ground between smoking and vaping. It heats real tobacco sticks instead of burning tobacco or vaporizing e-liquid.

The closest comparison is a dry herb vaporizer, though IQOS uses purpose-made tobacco sticks rather than loose herb. I’ve used IQOS, and it hasn’t won me over.

There are two stick types: HEETS work with blade-style IQOS devices, while TEREA is made for the induction-heated ILUMA range.

They aren’t interchangeable.

And as of October 2026, ILUMA isn’t authorized for sale in the US. If you’re thinking about getting an IQOS, there’s a few things YOU NEED TO REMEMBER:

  • the US IQOS system uses a blade device and HEETS.
  • TEREA belongs to the separate ILUMA range.
  • IQOS is a tobacco product, not an e-liquid vape. You get real tobacco, a short session and proprietary sticks.

My take: IQOS may suit an adult smoker who specifically wants heated tobacco. I’ve never liked the taste. To me, it’s like a damp wash rag. I also find the charging routine a monumental pain in the ass. Try it before you buy, if you can, because it definitely will not be for everyone (even more so if you’re used to traditional vapes).

Which IQOS devices are available in the USA?

IQOS ILUMA (1)Pin

As of October 2026, IQOS is available in select areas of Texas, Florida and Mississippi. The current US device is IQOS ORIGINALS, a two-piece system with a holder and pocket charger which, when fully charged, provides up to 20 uses.

The holder recharges between sessions, and the pocket charger needs charging after repeated uses. The range now includes older blade devices and the newer ILUMA system. Here’s how the main models differ:

IQOS ILUMA, ILUMA PRIME and ILUMA ONEInduction-heating devices with no bladeTEREA onlyNot authorized for US marketing as of October 2026
  • ORIGINALS is the blade-style IQOS system.
  • ILUMA is a different system that heats tobacco by induction.
  • They use different sticks.
  • PMI says it is waiting for US authorization to market ILUMA.

HEETS, HeatSticks and TEREA: what works with what?

  • HEETS, also called HeatSticks in some markets, are for blade-style IQOS devices.
  • TEREA is for ILUMA.

The sticks aren’t interchangeable, either, so don’t try to use TEREA in a blade device or HEETS in ILUMA.

A HEETS stick lasts up to six minutes or 14 puffs, whichever comes first, and is a fixed session. When it ends, the stick is finished and you need to remove it and dispose of it.

HEETS and TEREA flavors

TEREA Flavors RankedPin

The US HEETS range includes Bronze, Blue, Amber, Red and Green. Bronze has a warm, rounded tobacco taste. Blue combines tobacco with menthol, while Amber is more balanced and roasted. Red has a woody edge, and Green is the menthol option.

TEREA is a separate range for IQOS ILUMA devices. It isn’t compatible with the blade-style IQOS sold in the US, and TEREA flavors vary by market.

The range we tested includes:

  • Amber: rounded, toasted tobacco with light woody and nutty notes
  • Purple Wave: menthol with dark berry notes
  • Turquoise: lighter tobacco with crisp menthol and zesty notes
  • Sienna: richer toasted tobacco with woody notes
  • Bronze: mellow tobacco with cocoa and dried-fruit notes
  • Oasis Pearl: tobacco with creamy, nutty notes; the capsule adds tropical fruit and menthol
  • Blue: tobacco with peppermint and strong menthol cooling
  • Yellow: mild tobacco with brighter, zesty notes
  • Teak: rounded tobacco with creamy, nutty notes
  • Twilight Pearl: malty tobacco; the capsule adds blueberry, forest berries and menthol
  • Sun Pearl: tobacco with spicy, herbal notes; the capsule adds cooling summer fruit
  • Silver: light, balanced tobacco with subtle spicy and herbal notes

Other variants include Russet, Green, Ruby Wave, Zing Wave, Summer Wave, Provence Pearl, Starling Pearl, Bright Wave, Willow, Black Green, Kelly, Tidal Pearl, Beige, Gold, Khaki, Kona, Rigan, Soft Fuse, Laguna Swift, Abora Pearl, Riviera Pearl and Sakura Wave.

Flavor notes and availability differ between markets, so check the pack description where you buy.

What does IQOS cost to use?

You pay for the device, then keep buying the sticks. A 20-stick pack was around $8 during the US rollout, or roughly 40 cents per session before tax. Two packs a day would come to about $16 a day which isn’t exactly cheap but it is less than a pack of smokes in most places.

Here’s how that compares with other nicotine products:

ProductExample costWhat you’re paying for
IQOS HEETS / HeatSticksAbout $8 for 20 sticksAround 40 cents per short session
Nicotine pouchesAround $6 for a 15-pouch canAround 40 cents per pouch; how long one lasts depends on how you use it
Refillable vapeAround $7–$15 for a 30 ml bottleCost depends on how quickly you use the liquid; add replacement pods or coils

One HEETS / TEREA stick gives you a session of up to six minutes or 14 puffs. A pouch lasts as long as you keep it in, and a bottle of vape liquid could last a few days or much longer depending on your device and how often you vape.

What does FDA authorization mean?

IQOS has FDA authorization for sale in the US, and some specific IQOS products have a separate modified-risk order. That order allows a limited claim: adults who smoke and switch completely to the covered IQOS products can significantly reduce their exposure to certain harmful chemicals.

What’s good about IQOS?

  • It heats real tobacco. That’s the main draw if you want tobacco rather than e-liquid.
  • The session is familiar. You use one stick for a short, defined break.
  • There’s no flame or ash. The tobacco is heated rather than burned, though IQOS still produces an aerosol.
  • Some products have a limited FDA exposure claim. It applies when an adult smoker switches completely from cigarettes to the specific products covered by the order.

What’s not so good?

  • I don’t like the taste. The tobacco aerosol has a damp, stale quality to me. I’d try it before buying to see whether it works for you.
  • You’re tied to the right sticks. HEETS work in blade-style IQOS devices. TEREA works in ILUMA. You can’t use them interchangeably, and neither is a vape pod.
  • Sessions are short. A stick lasts up to six minutes or 14 puffs.
  • You have to manage the charging routine. The US ORIGINALS kit has a holder and a pocket charger. The holder needs to recharge between sessions, and the pocket charger needs charging after repeated uses.
  • The blade needs cleaning. Tobacco residue builds up, and sticks can break in the holder.

Is IQOS a vape?

The IQOS is not a vape for the simple reason that a vape, a traditional one, runs on and heats e-liquid. IQOS heats a tobacco stick; in this respect, it’s actually closer to a dry herb vaporizer in how it works.

Both produce an aerosol you inhale, but the device and the experience are different. HEETS aren’t pods, and IQOS isn’t made for vape juice.

Is IQOS worth using?

If you already smoke and want a tobacco-based product with a short, cigarette-style session, IQOS may be worth trying. You get heated tobacco and a device that avoids burning it. But even then I’d say it’s a tough sell…

I’ve used IQOS, and the taste is the deal-breaker for me. I don’t enjoy the tobacco aerosol, and I find the holder-and-charger setup more fiddly than I want. If you’re curious, try it first. Don’t just buy one. Me? I prefer my MTL pod vapes. They taste better and are much cheaper to run.
