Cruise ships sailing in international waters are kind of like their own small countries—they have to follow all of the rules and none of them, at the same time.

Most cruises departing from the United States must follow US Federal Law.

Because federal law has no issues with vaping nicotine, there is no restriction for bringing a vape mod onto a cruise ship. However, each cruise line is a separate entity, so the rules between individual lines may vary slightly as to how and where you may vape.

Some Restrictions May Apply

Whether you have a simple vape pen or a top-of-the-line best vape mod right now, you can bring it on the cruise ship. However, you won’t be able to vape wherever you want.

Cruise lines tend to treat vapes just as they would cigarettes, regardless of whether the vape has nicotine or not.

This means you’ll be restricted to vaping in designated smoking areas. Similarly, you won’t be allowed to vape in your room, and you’ll face hefty fines if you are caught vaping or set off any smoke detectors. Smoking on your room balcony is also typically not allowed.

Leave Marijuana Products at Home

It doesn’t matter where your cruise departed from or where your cruise is going, you won’t be allowed to bring a vape containing any marijuana products onto the cruise. This includes CBD products devoid of THC. This is because of the aforementioned fact that cruise lines follow US federal law, and marijuana is illegal under federal law.

Another issue is that cruise ships may stop in foreign countries, and they don’t want to be responsible for helping you to transport potentially illegal drugs into their ports of call. Most cruise lines have a zero-tolerance policy related to all drugs, including marijuana.

Typically, this means kicking you off the ship at the next port and possibly handing you over to the local authorities for prosecution. Even if you aren’t prosecuted, getting stranded in a foreign country far from home means you’d be facing hundreds or thousands of dollars in airfare to get back home.

Foreign Restrictions on Vaping

For the vast majority of cruises leaving the United States this won’t be an issue, but if you’ll be making any stops in foreign ports and wish to leave the ship for a tour or a day trip, you should do some basic research on whether vapes are allowed in the country you’ll be visiting.

Maybe you just decided to splurge and put a vape cart on your 200w mod. There’s nothing worse than having your brand-new custom mod confiscated, so make sure you do your homework.

Follow the Rules and You’re Good to Go

Just as you wouldn’t blow vape clouds in most indoor public places, follow the same etiquette on the cruise ship. Cruise ships are huge and have many outdoor and indoor areas where smoking is 100% permitted.

While vape mods don’t need to be kept upright, be careful with your vape juice cartridges, and make sure to store them upright and properly. Spilled vape juice is highly concentrated, and nicotine vapes are especially notorious for leaving terrible stains. Leaving nicotine stains could cause the cruise line to charge you for damages.

When in doubt, ask a cruise staff member where you’re allowed to vape—you certainly aren’t the first to ask, and you definitely won’t be the last. They’ll helpfully guide you to areas where you can vape to your heart’s content.
