Using CBD Roll On For Pain: What You Need To Know

By Drake Equation •  Updated: 11/03/22 •  5 min read

CBD helps reduce inflammation and is great for pain management, but is CBD roll on for pain something you should be looking at? Let’s investigate…

If you train hard, either in the gym or running and/or cycling long distances, you’ll know all about muscle pain, cramps, and bodily aches. If you train sufficiently hard enough, you break down muscle fibers and they’re forced to repair – this creates inflammation and pain.

As you adapt to exercise, however, your body gets better at recovering – and you get used to the feeling of being “trained” (meaning, you can deal with the pain associated with your workouts). But what’s the deal with CBD roll ons? Do they help with localized pain and things like DOMS? Let’s find out…

CBD Roll On For Pain

Topical CBD, or any type of CBD that is applied to the skin, either in gel or cream form, works much the same as CBD ingested into your body. The difference, however, is that with topical CBD the effects are localized, meaning you ONLY get the benefits where it is applied.

CBD Roll On For Pain

For instance, if you have sore calve muscles and you apply CBD cream to your calve, the CBD will only affect your calve muscle – it will not help with any other part of your leg because the CBD is acting as a topical; it is not present in your bloodstream or metabolized by the body.

CBD has long-lasting therapeutic effects without psychoactive side-effects. Thus, use of topical CBD has potential as effective treatment of arthritic symptomatology. At present, one in five (21%) adults worldwide are diagnosed with some form of arthritis by their physicians (Helmick et al., 2008). The data presented suggest transdermal CBD is a good candidate for developing improved therapies for these debilitating disease.

This is fine, though – especially if you’re prone to soreness in certain parts of your body, and it is certainly better than relying on NSAIDs to combat pain, as these can cause side effects as well as all kinds of upsets to your stomach. In this respect, CBD is a great alternative to NSAIDs for natural pain management.

Types of CBD Roll-Ons

There are two types of CBD roll-ons: those that contain CBD oil and those that contain CBD isolate.

CBD oil-based roll-ons typically contain other beneficial ingredients like essential oils, while CBD isolate-based roll-ons tend to be more focused on the CBD itself.

What is CBD Isolate?

CBD isolate is a highly purified form of CBD that has been isolated from the other cannabinoids and compounds found in the hemp plant. CBD isolate is a white powder that is odorless and flavorless.

It is often used in CBD products as an ingredient because it is very potent and contains a high concentration of CBD. CBD isolate can be added to food and beverages or taken orally. It can also be used to make CBD products such as oils, tinctures, and topicals like CBD roll ons.

Is CBD Good For Inflammation?

CBD oil is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, and research shows it can help reduce inflammation in the body. A recent study found that CBD oil was effective in reducing inflammation in rats.

CBD oil is also effective in reducing pain and promoting healing, making it a great option for people with chronic pain. A study published in the European Journal of Pain found that CBD oil was effective in reducing inflammation and pain in rats.

The study found that CBD oil was able to reduce inflammation by reducing the production of inflammatory cytokines. This is exciting news for people who suffer from chronic inflammation, as CBD oil may be a natural and effective treatment option.

Topical vs Oral CBD

If you want the most bang for your buck, though, you’re always better going with an oral form of CBD. CBD oil, when applied under the tongue, acts fast and is absorbed by your body within about 20 minutes.

It then starts working its magic, reducing inflammation and helping your muscles to recover faster – this is why plenty of runners use CBD.

Similarly, with CBD oil you have much more choice when it comes to overall strength. You can get CBD oil in a range of strengths – from 300mg right the way up to 16000mg, although the latter will set you back a fair amount (the best part of £250).

Me? I find the sweet spot, for achy muscles and speeding up recovery, is between 3000mg and 6000mg. This is was I use to help my legs recover after longer running sessions. My go-to brands right now, are as follows:

CBD oil when applied under your tongue has way more bioavailability than CBD cream that is applied to your skin. It is also absorbed more efficiently and metabolized by your body better than capsule forms of CBD which often get depleted when they enter your gut.

For this reason, if you want the maximum benefits when using CBD, make sure you use CBD oil and keep the strength anywhere from 3000mg to 6000mg. This is the sweet spot for CBD’s magical properties. You can go lower, but you’ll need to take more to yield the same results which, over time, just results in using more and spending more money.
