Has your e-liquid suddenly lost its taste? Whilst you could put it down to a dodgy batch of e-liquids or inappropriate storage, there’s a good chance you’re suffering from vaper’s tongue…
Here we explain a little bit about this vaping issue – including what it is, what the common causes are, and the best way to cure it.
What is vaper’s tongue?
Every vaper has a go-to e-liquid. Something that tantalises their taste buds and keeps their cravings at arm’s length. However, after vaping the same flavour for a while, it can feel as though a layer has formed on your tongue – impacting on the overall taste and enjoyment of your vape. This is what’s known as ‘vaper’s tongue’.
No matter how long you’ve been vaping for; whether you’re a regular or casual vaper, what e-liquid you use or the nicotine strength, this phenomenon can happen to anyone – and usually without warning.
What causes it?
E-liquids awaken your senses in more than one way, so if you’ve noticed that your flavour of choice doesn’t taste like it normally does, or you can’t taste it at all, this is a clear indication that you have vaper’s tongue.
But how do you get vaper’s tongue?
Dehydration
Are you drinking plenty of water? The two key ingredients in e-liquids are Propylene Glycol (PG) and Vegetable Glycerine (VG). PG is hygroscopic, meaning that its molecules bond with the water molecules in saliva – drawing moisture away from your mouth. This can leave you feeling thirsty.
Using The Same Flavoured E-Juice
Ok, so when you find an e-liquid you like, it’s easy to become complacent and put off changing it for as long as possible. However, it’s good to mix things up a bit – experimenting with new, exciting flavours – to ensure you don’t revert to smoking.
Illness
Feeling under the weather? Perhaps you have got a common cold or sore throat? The truth is, illness can affect your sense of smell, leading to blocked airways that alter the taste of your e-liquid.
Other factors can play a part in vaper’s tongue too. Things like poor oral hygiene, drug use, stress and e-liquids that have reached their expiry date.
How to Get Rid of Vaper’s Tongue
Although your e-juice might not provide those strong, delicious flavours that you’re used to, the good news is that vaper’s tongue is easy to fix within a couple of days/weeks.
Below we list just a few simple steps to remove the strange sensation so you can resume vaping:
- Drink More Water – it might seem a tad obvious, but keeping hydrated between each vape will help to keep that dry throat at bay – allowing for a more enjoyable experience.
- Give up Cigarettes – quitting smoking not only has long-term health benefits but will ensure that the flavour from your e-cigarette is not compromised. Many people switch to vaping to reduce their nicotine levels, and the sooner you remove the tobacco, the better.
- Clean Your Vape – to get the most out of your e-juice, the vape coil needs to be cleaned regularly – especially if you’re swapping to a brand new flavour – because a dirty or clogged coil will result in an unpleasant taste.
- Mix Up Your E-Liquids – don’t just stick to one flavour, try a few different ones and switch between them. When you repeatedly vape the same flavours, over and over again, your taste buds get used to them quickly and they end up tasteless.
