Vapebeat Explains…
What Is A Sub-Ohm Vape Tank?

The team behind VapeBeat has been testing vape products since 2015. To date, we’ve tested over 400+ devices across every major product category, and we never run intrusive ads or sell your data.

Is a sub-ohm vape tank right for you?
A sub-ohm tank runs coils (usually of the mesh variety these days) below 1.0 ohm resistance, and is built to push bigger clouds and stronger flavour than a standard MTL setup.
Lower resistance means more power gets through, and more power means a completely different vaping experience.
I like to think of the hit more like an inhaler, you take it all the way down to your lungs right out of the gate (which is completely different to MTL vaping, or how you smoke a cigarette).
Plenty of vapers swear by sub-ohm vaping. I dabble from time to time, but I’m more of an MTL pod vape user these days. I currently run the Vaporesso XROS Pro 2 which is the highest-rated pod vape we’ve tested in the last 12 months.
The components and parts you’ll find inside a sub-ohm vape tank

If you’re new to the concept of sub-ohm vape tanks, here’s how they work in practice:
- The draw. Open and airy, built for direct-to-lung hits straight into your chest, not held in the mouth first like MTL.
- The power needed. Sub-ohm coils are hungry. You’ll want a mod that can actually push the wattage, not the low-power devices that MTL tanks are happy running on.
- The juice. High-VG liquids are the pairing here. Thinner, high-PG juices just don’t hold up at sub-ohm temperatures and airflow. Viscosity is important, as is the quality of the juice you use. Don’t scrimp on either.
- The output. Denser clouds, more flavour off the exhale, and a noticeably more intense hit than a tight MTL draw.
Sub-ohm vaping is about clouds, performance, and flavor. It is completely different from the sensation you get when smoking a cigarette, and it does take a bit of getting used to, particularly if you get the wrong juice.
If you want something discreet and cigarette-like, this isn’t your tank; go with a refillable pod vape or a disposable vape, though preferably a refillable pod (they’re miles better and loads cheaper to run)
If you want vapour that fills a room and flavour that actually hits, this is exactly the setup you’re after.
As for go-to sub-ohm kits, whereby you get everything you need from the tank to the mod itself, I’d recommend the VooPoo Drag 6 which we recently awarded our prestigious Vape Mod of The Year Award 2026.
