If you’re researching vaping mod kits, you might be wondering if they are all compatible with just any vape mod coil. After all, all vape mod coils look more or less the same. However, when it comes to build and functionality, they differ drastically. So, to answer your question: no, all vape mod coils are not the same.

In this post, we’ll explore the differences between different vape mod coils in detail, along with some basics. Let’s get started!

What Are Vape Mod Coils?

Before we dive into the differences between vape mod coils, let’s define some basic terms. A vape mod coil is the component of the vape mod that heats the e-liquid to turn it into inhalable vapors.

The coil is typically made of a wire, such as Kanthal or stainless steel, and it is wrapped around a cotton wick. When the mod’s battery activates, it sends an electric current through the wire, which heats the coil and vaporizes the e-liquid.

There are different types of vape mod coils, and they differ from one another in terms of:

  • Material of the wire
  • Resistance
  • Shape and size

While there are differences in build, they also have varying compatibility. This means that not all vape mod coils are suitable for all mods.

Key Differences

Now, let’s check out the differences between various vape mod coils in detail:

Wire Material

Vape mod coil manufacturers use a variety of materials for the wire, but the most popular ones include:

  • Kanthal: It’s malleable, easy to work with, highly durable, and resistant to high temperatures.
  • Stainless steel: It’s next to Kanthal in terms of longevity and temp resistance. It works with both Power Mode and Temperature Control.
  • Nichrome: Although this metal is quicker to burn and melt, it offers a more flavorful experience.
  • Nickel: Nickel is a soft metal. Hence, its performance is similar to Nichrome. It’ll melt quickly, but you can enjoy excellent flavors.
  • Titanium: Titanium is the most expensive metal used for vape mod coils. It lasts longer than Kanthal but is also flammable and linked with nickel allergies.

Apart from metals, manufacturers also use glass and ceramic for vape mod coils. Glass coils withstand high heat and do not affect the e-liquid flavors. However, they are prone to residue build-up, which means they require more maintenance.

Ceramic coils are the highest-quality coils. They do not require regular maintenance, offer a safe vaping experience, effectively withstand high heat, and do not affect the flavor.

Resistance

Resistance is measured in Ohms and determines the amount of power needed to heat the coil. As a general rule, the higher the resistance, the less power it requires to heat the coil. This means a coil with a very high resistance will produce low amounts of vapor.

Similarly, a coil with low resistance will require more power to run and will be able to produce greater amounts of vapor. Those who prefer heavy and frequent vaping should opt for low-resistance coils. A high-resistance coil, however, will ensure a steady battery use and cooler vape. This makes them a great choice for anyone who prefers light vaping.

Ensure that the resistance of the coil aligns with the specific mod being used. Using a coil with the wrong resistance can lead to poor performance or even damage to the mod.

Shape and Size

Coils come in different shapes and sizes, which impacts the vaping experience. The most common shape is the ‘vertical’ coil, where the wire is wrapped around the cotton wick in a vertical orientation. This shape provides a more direct path for the vapor to travel. This, in turn, results in a more intense flavor and a stronger throat hit.

Another popular shape is the ‘horizontal’ coil. For this shape, the wire wrap has a horizontal orientation around the cotton wick. This shape provides a larger surface area to the e-liquid and results in smoother, more consistent vapor production.

Compatibility

Lastly, vape mod coils also differ in compatibility. As mentioned earlier, not every vape mod coil is compatible with every mod. Some mods may require a specific type of coil, and if you use the wrong type, it can lead to poor performance. Check your mod’s specifications and recommended coil types before making a purchase.
