The different parts of a vape tank explained, and what they actually do
Most tanks break down into five parts: drip tip, top cap, glass section, coil, and base.
Wear one of them out and you’ll feel it, usually as a burnt taste, a leak, or it just doesn’t hit quite as well as it used to. This can present as gurgling or bubbling. Either way, it sucks and it usually means something isn’t right.
Knowing all the different components that make up your vape tank makes it much easier to diagnose different issues when they arise (which they will from time to time).
Here’s how it breaks down, piece by piece:
- Drip tip. The mouthpiece on top. Swap it for a wider or narrower one and you change how the draw feels in your mouth.
- Top cap. Seals everything shut and holds the fill port. Some tanks fill from the top, some from the side, depends on the design.
- Glass section. This is your reservoir, it holds the juice and wraps around the coil. Crack it (and it happens more than you’d think) and the tank’s dead until you swap the glass.
- Coil. The engine room. Wire wrapped in cotton, and it’s the only part actually turning your juice into vapour. This is also the part you’ll replace most often.
- Base. Connects to your device through the 510 thread, and on most tanks it’s where the airflow control lives too.
O-rings don’t make the headline list, but they’re doing quiet work between every section, keeping juice where it belongs instead of in your pocket.
Here’s the thing worth remembering: all of these individual parts work as a chain, and one breaks the others are affected. For instance:
- A worn coil throws off flavour.
- A missing or perished O-ring throws off leaks.
- A cracked glass throws off the whole tank.
When you know which part is acting up, you can fix the actual problem instead of just guessing.
If you’re not sure how these pieces fit into the bigger picture, I’ve got the full rundown in my vape tank types guide which covers all the basics and different types.
