How long should a vape tank last for?
The tank itself can last indefinitely. I’ve got tanks that still work fine that are now well over a decade old. What actually wears out fast is the coil, not the tank.
Treat your vape tank as durable hardware, not a disposable part, and it’ll outlast most of the gear you buy alongside it.
And you can usually buy spare parts for most modern sub-ohm tanks.

Here’s how the lifespan actually splits:
- The tank body. Metal threads and glass hold up fine for the long haul if you keep it clean and don’t drop it. I’ve had tanks running well past a year with zero issues.
- The coil. This is your real consumable. Sweet, sugary juices and cranking the wattage both burn coils out faster. Keep it cleaner and gentler on power, and you’ll stretch that lifespan noticeably.
- O-rings. These wear down quietly in the background. First sign of a leak or a seal that feels loose, check these before you blame anything else.
- The glass. Usually fine, but it’s the one part that can end a tank’s life overnight if it cracks.
So when do you actually bin the tank? When the threads strip, the glass keeps cracking, the airflow mechanism jams, or you’re still getting leaks after swapping the coil and O-rings.
These types of issues tend to affect cheaper tanks and clone variants (knock-offs), where the quality control isn’t quite as stringent.
Short of that, there’s no clock running on it so if you get a decent one you could potentially be running it for years to come.
My OG Kayfun tank is older than my son by quite a margin (he’s just turning 7, by the way). But it still works great, although it is a rebuildable tank which, while much better for longevity, aren’t anywhere near as popular as they used to be back in the day.
If the hardware and quality control are decent, though, and you take good care of it, you can get a lot of usage from a vape tank. Particularly if you stick with quality brands like Vaporesso, UWELL, HorizonTech, and GeekVape.
The main cost when running tanks is replacement coils, so it is important to go with the right one otherwise you’ll be spending a fortune on spare coils. My top picks right now are detailed and compared below.
