What is Vapor? Spoiler: It Ain’t Smoke! It’s The FUTURE

Vapor – the stuff that makes vaping, vaping! What is it? A quick and easy to follow explanation of vapor and vaping (and why it’s NOT the same as smoking)

Whenever we talk about vaping, it’s easy to get bogged down in chatter about tanks, mods, builds, and different styles of vaping.

But most people, especially newbies, are unsure what actually makes up the vapor that you breathe in and out while vaping.

Vapor is also where the term “vaping” comes from – you heat liquid (in this context E Juice) and that turns into vapor which you inhale and breath out. Vapor simulates the sensation of smoking, just without all the nasty stuff you get from combustible materials.

What is Vapor – A Definition

The vapor you breathe in and out while vaping is, essentially, a smoke alternative. It looks and feels like smoke, but it actually has nothing in common with tobacco smoke – or any type of smoke generation from combustible materials.

When you burn stuff, stuff like diesel or tobacco, you create a noxious byproduct. Inhale this stuff… and, well, you’re not going to end up in a good place. This is why vaping (and electric cars) were invented: they simulate the experience of combustion, just without all the nefarious fumes.

Vapor – Smoking vs. Vaping

I could bang on all day about the virtues of vaping over smoking. But this is going to be a long article, so I’ll use a nifty infographic here to give you a better idea of the main, key differences between smoking and vapor – because there are quite a few!

Vapor & E-Liquid Constituents – PG vs. VG

What is PG (Propylene Glycol)

PG and VG serve different purposes and create different types of vapor and experiences while vaping them.

#1) PG-heavy mixes, for instance, give more of a throat-hit

#2) VG is smoother on the throat

This is why a lot of professional or more-experienced users that build their own mods and coils tend to prefer it.

PG is less viscous than VG and it carries flavour better too. This is why a lot of brands tend to use it more liberally than VG.

I personally like a good 80/20 VG/PG split because you get the best of both worlds: high wattage vaping, smooth hits and just enough of a throat hit to know you’re taking a hit.

Your preference may differ, so I’d advise you to try out a few different types of mix in your local vape shop.

What is VG (Vegetable Glycerin)

VG — or, Vegetable Glycerin — is derived from vegetable oil and is quite a bit thicker than PG.

It also has a slightly sweet taste as well and because the hit from VG liquids is smoother than PG, 100% VG mixes are often favored by sub-ohm vapers.

Most ejuice — like 99% of the stuff — is a mix of both and, depending on where you shop and which brands you use, you can usually find something that suits your needs ideally.

I started my vaping life with cheap stuff, but then soon discovered my local vape shop and began experimenting with better quality ejuice and different PG/VG compositions before finding my personal sweet spot — 80/20.

Is Vapor Safe?

Is vapor safe? This is the number one thing that is stopping millions of people quitting smoking and moving over to vaping.

The media does not help, either. In just the last 12 months, there have been multiple stories, widely reported in the media, that have actually been debunked by proper science and research.

Plenty of people want vaping to go away, but it’s not because of health concerns. No, it’s because of profits – a lot of companies (notably Big Pharma and Big Tobacco) are losing customers hand-over-fist.

And they’re not too happy about this.

Thankfully, there are plenty of vaping advocates in the form of the NHS in the UK, the Royal College of Physicians, and plenty more besides.

Take Dr. Konstantinos Farsalinos, for instance.

He’s a cardiologist, a research fellow at the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center in Athens, as well as the Department of Pharmacy, University of Patras, Greece.

He debunked a ton of studies that were published with the sole purpose of demonizing vaping.

The most notable of which was the one pertaining to formaldehyde – you can check that out in more detail here.

Obviously, it goes without saying that you’re better off doing neither, living your life vape, nicotine free. That’s the end goal of vaping – it’s a stepping stone away from tobacco towards a life free of nicotine addiction.

So if you’re smoking now, reading this, and thinking about making the switch, DO IT, you have literally nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Millions of people have stopped smoking overnight with vaping and you can do it too.
